Event Details

This November, Create North and The Light invite artists, makers, designers, curators and creative practitioners to come together for an evening of ideas, inspiration, making and connection.

A CONVERSATION WITH CHARLI SUMMERS

We are delighted to welcome Charli Summers, Curator at The Light, who will share her journey into curating and her experience of relocating to Durham to develop exhibitions, events and creative programmes at the venue.

Charli will discuss her approach to curation, including how she brings contemporary perspectives to The Light’s exhibitions and her recent collaboration with senior curator Natasha Howes on the opening exhibition Victory Over the Sun.

What does it mean to be a curator? How do we create context and meaning around creative work and collections? And how can the principles of curation help us think differently about our own creative practice?

Drawing on examples from her work and studies, Charli will explore how exhibitions are conceived, developed and delivered, and how the way we frame, connect and present ideas can shape the experiences of audiences.

The session will encourage us to reflect on our work from a fresh perspective and consider new ways of presenting and communicating our ideas.

Charli will also offer a preview of The Light’s future programme, including details of how artists and creatives from across the region can get involved.

This promises to be an insightful and informal conversation, with opportunities for discussion and questions throughout.

STEP OUTSIDE

Then it’s time to leave the conversation behind and step outside into the dark.

Our Maker Room will be open throughout the evening, with everything you need to create your own light lantern. Experiment with materials, make something to carry and take your creation outside into the night.

Inspired by Bonfire Night, we’ll explore light, movement and darkness through light drawing and long-exposure photography, using Tina’s light-drawing techniques to create unexpected images in the grounds around The Light.

Make a lantern. Draw with light. Chase sparks. Play with shadows. See what happens.

Whether you’re developing a new body of work, looking for collaborators, curious about curation, exploring how to present your practice, or simply want to meet other people making interesting things across the Northeast — you’re invited.

You never know who you’ll meet, what you’ll make, or where the next spark will lead.

(Access information for The Light can be found on their website here. We try to make our events accessible across a range of needs and preferences – please do get in touch with us if there are specific things that it would be helpful for us to know to make the event accessible for you.)
