Event Details

Durham University’s new Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics is offering a commissioning opportunity for a participatory visual artist to work with researchers to run a series of workshops in local schools. This will result in the creation of art to be exhibited in the flagship Ogden Centre West building designed by the renowned architects Studio Libeskind.

Proposals from artists working in a wide range of visual media are welcomed. The commission must reflect or interpret the research and be sympathetic to the building. A commission fee of up to £3,500 is available to cover the development and delivery of the school workshops, transport, materials and the creation of the final piece.

To help you to respond to this commission and to wider opportunities in the sector, we are running a day of free professional development workshops in conjunction with the University and the Institute of Physics.

The day is designed to help you explore the development of collaborative art projects with multiple partners (including research scientists and schools) and investigate a range of successful science and art collaborations.
Sessions will include contributions from:

Artists and scientists who have worked on collaborative participatory projects
Organisations who specialise in participatory projects with young people
Educational organisations who support art & science programmes in schools
Organisations that provide financial support to science and art programmes

Detailed information and advice about the commission and the application process will be provided. The day will include a tour of the building, and opportunities to chat with academic researchers and the commissioning team who will offer advice about how best to respond to the proposal, present your work, prepare a budget and demonstrate your capacity to engage in the initiative.

The event will be informal and include opportunities to network.
