Event Details

To celebrate the exhibiting of surrealist artist Salvador Dalí’s Christ of St John of the Cross at the Spanish Gallery in Bishop Auckland, Create North has commissioned artist Rachel Levitas to deliver a Printing Masterclass at the Auckland Project 22nd July 2022.

The painting, on loan from Glasgow Life Museums, will be displayed alongside El Greco’s Christ on the Cross, uniting two Spanish masterpieces inside the UK’s first gallery dedicated to the art of the Spanish Golden Age. These two works will act as the inspiration for the creative content of the work created in the workshop and the class will start with a tour of the work and the Spanish Gallery.

Rachel is from Durham, studied Fine Art at Camberwell School of Art, Advanced Printmaking at Central St Martins and Postgraduate Painting at the Royal Academy Schools where she was awarded the Turner Gold Medal. In 2010 Rachel was awarded first prize at the prestigious Lynn Painter-Stainers Painting Prize for her painting Urban Fox III.
She has extensive experience in teaching a variety of techniques including Oil, Watercolour, and Acrylic Painting and Intaglio and Relief printing. Rachel has run a number of projects in the community and has worked with a variety of students ranging in age from four years old to 80+.

Rachel will offer opportunities for participants to:
• Explore the techniques of two plate or two block printing
• Learn how to register plates or blocks using a jig
• Use masks and stencils to creating layered images
• Experiment with colour
• Consider embossed elements
• Explore texture and found materials

By the end of the class you will have completed a two plate or two block print.

Refreshments and lunch will be provided.

Fully Funded opportunities to participate in this workshop are reserved for creatives living or working in South Durham.

Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.
