“Warm” is a fresh creative initiative supported by Arts Council England, dedicated to exploring the role of the arts in providing warmth and support to displaced communities.
In collaboration with Create North, Newcastle Library is set to host three creative residencies in partnership with Ukrainian communities across the northeast.
Ukrainian artists will design and lead the residencies tailored to three different groups within the Ukrainian community. The culmination of each residency will feature an exhibition in the city library where the groups showcase their work, offering valuable insights into what warmth means for diverse cohorts.
To further enhance the sense of warmth, Create North and regional artists will work alongside the Ukrainian artists, offering insights on how newly settled practitioners can build their creative practice and integrate into the creative community in the region.
Our goal is to use creativity and the arts to explore different perspectives on experiencing ‘warmth’, including notions of being welcomed into a new community, feeling safe, friendship and empathy.
To introduce the project, we are hosting an event in Newcastle City Library on Friday 1st March, 2pm – 3.30pm. This event will be an opportunity to:
- Learn about the project
- Meet the artists and practitioners taking part
- Discuss how you or your organisation can get involved
- Share information about other projects that might align with “Warm”
- The opportunities we hope this project will create for the future
This event is aimed at:
- Organisations working with refugee and newly arrived communities
- Arts and Culture organisations
- Artists and Creative Practitioners

Newcastle Libraries, in partnership with Create North and Newcastle City Council’s Arts Development Team, is offering nine creative Ukrainian people an opportunity to take part in a fully funded/paid creative residency in partnership with established UK-based artists and Ukrainian communities across the northeast.
“Warm” is a fresh creative initiative supported by Arts Council England, dedicated to exploring the role of the arts in providing warmth and support to displaced communities.
This opportunity is for 9 Ukrainian artists to design and lead the residencies tailored to different groups within the Ukrainian community. The culmination of each residency will feature an exhibition where the groups showcase their work, offering valuable insights into what warmth means for different groups of people.
We are looking for Ukrainians who have recently arrived in the Northeast and are interested in pursuing a creative career in the UK. This project will be suitable for creative practitioners with professional experience in Ukraine, but who want to develop their career in the UK, and people who want to explore how their creative skills could be used to establish a new career. For people who have not previously worked professionally, this project will create the first step on their pathway to a career in the creative industries.
This opportunity will involve the following time commitments:
- A planning and onboarding session for all twelve creatives involved in the project over two days in April 2024, led by Create North.
- A three-day (or six half-day) participatory arts residency at City Library, working alongside the UK-based artists and a Ukrainian community group
- A one-day evaluation, sharing and dissemination event
We can offer various ways to engage with this project. This can include paid employment: Fee: £1,188 (6 days at £198 per day).
If you are unable to engage in paid employment for any reason but would still like to be considered for this role, please contact rob@createnorth.co.uk to discuss how this might be made possible.
